Investment Casting PositioningHole and boss position tolerance depends on parent casting configurations. Holes or boss position on the periphery of concentricity examples shown will be affected by the degree of eccentricity. The position of holes or bosses on a flat plate will be affected by linear tolerances. A new factor enters here, however, Linear tolerances are based on volumetric shrinkage, and holes and bosses disturb this shrinkage. These tolerance bands can be reduced by about 10% for a configuration that disturbs a shrinkage pattern. It is difficult to predict the exact amount, and the foundry may wish to rework tooling to take full advantage of these better tolerances.Holes and bosses on a parent diameter are affected by the diameter's degree of roundness, although the 10% reduction noted above still applies. ![]() The parallelism and straightness of such holes is based on parent casting straightness, thus the tolerance standards already given apply.
